In a tightly contested men's decider, Houdet (the world number 2) lost a close opening set to Joachim in a rematch of their 2013 British Open final, which was then played indoors.

Houdet recovered, though, and raced through the second against Joachim, the world number four, then battled back from 5-3 down in the deciding set and saved a match point at 5-4 to eventually clinch a 6-7, 6-1, 7-6 victory in this Super Series event.

Next tournament for Joachim: the Swiss Open in Geneva this week
